About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

 

About the Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED):
The Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED) was established to shepherd the state’s energy plan. OED focuses on the development and implementation of comprehensive energy planning for the state that utilizes all of Indiana’s energy resources and supports a strong, dynamic, and growing economy. OED strives to be a national leader in the creation of innovative policy solutions and programs for affordable, reliable energy. 

 

Role Overview:

The Indiana Office of Energy Development is seeking a Policy Intern to join our Office in summer 2026. The intern will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to, researching, analyzing data, and writing on energy policy initiatives. Work will also include developing presentations regarding assigned research projects to disseminate findings and lessons to target audiences. The Policy Intern will also be engaged in related stakeholder outreach.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, have strong analytical and critical thinking skills, be a self-starter and possess an innovative mindset with an eagerness to work alongside and collaborate with a team.


Hourly Rate:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

 

A Day in the Life:

As a Policy Intern for the Indiana Office of Energy Development, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience with: 

  • Researching and analyzing key energy issues, policies, and initiatives;
  • Drafting and editing white papers, briefings, and high-level presentations;
  • Collaborating with OED team members, with the objective of developing, organizing, and creating content for policy research and initiatives;
  • Utilizing applicable technology on a regular basis to assist with OED projects;
  • Support OED Communications with content for OED education initiatives;
  • Supporting team members by crafting talking points and agency presentations; and
  • Participating in stakeholder meetings and special events, such as webinars, energy tours, etc.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline 
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
