Position Overview

BWXT is seeking a Director of Safeguards and Security to lead, manage, and continuously improve the enterprise-wide security programs within our Uranium Enrichment Business Unit, supporting the Domestic Uranium Enrichment Centrifuge Experiment (DUECE) program and related DOE/NNSA initiatives.

This executive role will be responsible for the strategic development and operational oversight of Physical Security, Information Security, Personnel Security, Nuclear Material Control & Accountability (NMC&A), and all Classification programs. The selected candidate will play a key role in ensuring compliance with DOE, NRC, and NNSA regulatory frameworks, while protecting national security interests across highly sensitive nuclear enrichment operations.

Your Day to Day as the Director of Safeguards and Security – Uranium Enrichment:

-Lead and manage the Safeguards and Security Division for the BWXT Enrichment Operations, LLC, overseeing all aspects of:

-Physical security systems and access controls
-Cybersecurity and information protection
-Classification and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) management
-Nuclear Material Control & Accountability (NMC&A)
-Personnel and Operations Security
-Serve as the primary interface with DOE, NNSA, NRC, and intelligence community stakeholders on security and classification matters.
-Provide executive guidance on the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of security-related policies and procedures in accordance with DOE Orders (e.g., 470.4B, 475.2B) and NNSA directives.
-Lead self-assessments, vulnerability analyses, and audits to ensure the enterprise maintains readiness and full compliance with regulatory standards.
-Drive a strong security culture across engineering, science, and operations personnel, including tailored training programs for classification, OPSEC, and handling of sensitive materials.
-Serve as Classification Officer and Derivative Classifier, providing final authority and expert guidance on classification determinations.
-Manage secure communications and safeguard classified and sensitive nuclear technology, export-controlled information, and dual-use research.
-Collaborate with R&D, program leadership, and external federal entities to provide safeguards strategy and policy input for future enrichment technologies.

Required Qualifications:

-Minimum 20 years of leadership experience in U.S. Government security programs (DOE, DOD, NRC) including extensive classification authority and safeguards leadership.
-Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a related field is required; advanced degree a plus.
-Demonstrated and proven executive experience managing complex security programs within nuclear or high-risk federal facilities.
-In-depth understanding of nuclear fuel cycle, uranium enrichment technologies, and regulatory requirements related to classified and sensitive matter.
-Experience directly supporting DOE/NNSA missions and working with national laboratories or defense contractors.
-Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to engage and influence senior government and industry stakeholders.
-U.S. citizenship.
-Must be able to maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q level security clearance or DoD Top Secret with SSBI.
-Ability to report to an assigned work location. This is not a remote work opportunity. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

-Active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q level security clearance (or DoD Top Secret with SSBI). SCI eligible also preferred.
-Facility Security Officer (FSO) and DOE/NRC Classification Officer certifications strongly preferred.
-Security programmatic start-up experience with similar enrichment technologies.
-Prior experience supporting advanced enrichment technologies (e.g., SILEX, centrifuge R&D, laser enrichment).
-Experience with the design and implementation of safeguards for pilot and full-scale nuclear facilities.
-Strong knowledge of export control compliance, including ITAR and EAR regulations.
-Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing security staff across multiple domains.

Pay: $161,000 - $233,000

The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $161,000 and $233,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.  The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
